The Honda HA-420 HondaJet is the first business jet developed by Honda Aircraft Company. The light business jet was designed in Japan and then developed and jets are manufactured in Greensboro, North Carolina in the United States. Honda approved commercial development of the HondaJet in 2004. The HondaJet made its world debut on 28 July 2005, at EAA AirVenture (Oshkosh Airshow). Honda then announced on 25 July 2006 at Oshkosh Airshow that it would commercialize the HondaJet.
The HondaJet’s over-the-wing engine mount configuration was designed to maximize cabin space, and for achieving lower wave drag at a high Mach number. The nose and wing are designed for laminar flow, and the main fuselage has a constant profile, making an eventual stretch easier. The combination of engine placement, wing and fuselage was achieved using computer simulations and wind tunnels. Honda states that the combination of lightweight materials, aerodynamics and efficient engines gives the HondaJet up to 20% better fuel efficiency than similar aircraft.
Honda began developing its own small turbofan engine, the HF118, in 1999. This led to the HF120, developed with GE Aviation under the GE-Honda partnership. The HF120 was test-flown on a Cessna Citation CJ1. The engine features a single fan, a two-stage compressor and a two-stage turbine. The GE Honda HF120 received FAA type certification on 13 December 2013, and production certification in 2015.
The passenger area is 5.43 m (17.80 ft) long and has an enclosed toilet. The semi-round cabin is 12.1 ft long, 1.52 m (5.00 ft) wide, and 1.46 m (4.80 ft) high. The aircraft is equipped with a touchscreen 3-display Garmin G3000 glass cockpit system (i.e. most of the cockpit readouts are presented on flat-panel displays).
In 2014, the plane was awarded ‘Best of What’s New’ title by Popular Science magazine.

Many current flight decks are constructed based on the federated concept of avionics design. This is where individual components or “black boxes” contain hardware and applicable software to perform specific functions. Early auto pilot systems required an auto pilot computer and separate servo amplifiers that would generate the signals to move the various flight control devices. In more recent years these devices were located together in one box and flight guidance computers were even added resulting in an automatic flight control system (AFCS) computer.
The modular concept of the Epic system has resulted in what is called a “distributed system”. In this case avionics functions, electronic circuits, and switching devices are replaced by software allowing data to be carried on high-speed buses to enable multiple tasks to be performed simultaneously.

The G550’s quiet interior also improves the cabin experience. Advanced sound suppression techniques keep engine noise where it belongs―outside the aircraft. Start with 14 Gulfstream signature oval windows to infuse the cabin with natural light. Introduce only 100 percent fresh air and combine that with cabin pressurized to a very low altitude. The result is subtle, but effective. Plentiful natural light and fresh air help passengers stay alert and focused. Low-altitude pressurization requires less exertion from the body and ensures passengers arrive at their destinations refreshed and alert.
More than 450 Gulfstream G550 aircraft are in service, and collectively, have flown more than 1 million hours, a performance that gives the Gulfstream G550 a National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) dispatch reliability rating of 99.9 percent―the equivalent of missing only one trip in five years of service.
